February 7, 2011 -- Attorneys at Cogan & McNabola obtained a $14 million settlement for the family of a mother who died during child birth. Her newborn baby also suffered irreversible brain damage during the delivery at Trinity Hospital in Chicago.
Sidonia Lawson was pregnant when she arrived at Trinity Hospital with contractions. She was induced first with Cervidil and then Pitocin. Her fetus did not tolerate labor and showed distress. However, a C-section delivery was delayed nearly 7 hours. The baby was delivered with HIE and is severely delayed. Sidonia arrested during delivery and died from an amniotic fluid embolism.
"What should have been a joyous occasion for this family became a nightmare due to medical negligence at Trinity Hospital," said attorney Mark McNabola. "To their credit, the attorneys and claims manager at Advocate acknowledge the severity of this situation and dealt good faith with us. As a result, this injured child and her family will not have to worry about future medical and life care needs."
The settlement was approved during mediation by Judge Daniel O'Connell.
